![]() ANTHR 420 PHOTO CONTEST | ![]() UpsCop stop him because he was skating which I thought it was funny and ironic since it was in change of classes. So now he is late and grounded for trying to be fast to get to class. | ![]() TimeI wanted to use the text from that sun dial to add a sense of time, the loss and gain of it, paired with a student on their phone, they could be wasting time on social media, they could be listening to a lecture, depending on who you are, that's a good or bad use of time, but its up to him how he monitors that time. the color is turned down expect for the blade of the sun dial, to really draw attention to the passing of time |

![]() Soaring babeDepicts typical parental college life. | ![]() PressureThe testing center is the ultimate test of pressure. It's just you, alone, relying wholly on your knowledge and the work that you have dedicated to mastering the exam content. The pressure one might feel envelopes them as this student's sweater envelopes her. | ![]() Religious InfluenceI wanted to catch students (or in this case maybe a professor) walking briskly past the mural of Joseph Smith, to show that even if students don't stop to ponder the religious influences in the university, they were subconsciously there |
![]() Pouring MateTo demonstrate the boiling water used to drink mate and depict how mate is prepared | ![]() Office of BelongingI attempted to get an image that displayed the amount of people walking by as this man was speaking directly to them through a microphone. I wanted to show the irony of the Office of Belonging being ignored by so many people. | ![]() Meet the new student on campus: SpaceShowing the way people will sit one seat away from each other, making space to avoid interaction. |
![]() Material RecruitmentI wanted to show a slightly over-saturated image of those working on recruiting at the booth to represent the bright attempt to get people to see the booth with material objects. They were using a raffle to get a pair of shoes, Pop-Tarts, and buttons to get people to come talk to them. | ![]() Mate dulcePeople who drink mate with sugar are often judged; usually only children drink it with sugar. But, this image shows an extended hand and sugar offered to a friend to demonstrate how in different environments, judgment is not present. | ![]() Mate calienteIt is very important culturally that mate is drunk very hot. This image with steam shows just how hot it is often ingested. |
![]() In time and in styleI just loved his style and how comfortable he looked since he didn't had to carry anything on his arms, and he was probably in time for class. | ![]() Man in the MiddleThis image shows a man blocking the view to the booth. I wanted to show the lack of visibility around if you're walking between classes. Trying to find belonging can be tough when there are so many things and people blocking your view. | ![]() Make wayShowing the space people make while walking around campus, whether it is through their own conversations, or through technology |
![]() In the space betweenIt shows the space the students will subconsciously make between them to create a comfort bubble. Space is the focus in this photo. | ![]() Hastily studyingThis simply captures the activities that students do in the testing center: last-minute memorization, reviewing notes, mentally completing concepts. This student is studying nutrition. | ![]() Getting The Homework Done! (collaboratively)This image shows the women collaborating on a class assignment while also gossiping and enjoying each other's company. I wanted all my images to be more warm and bright to convey friendliness and sociability. |
![]() Game overWith this shoot, I wanted to capture the feelings that students might have going into the testing center during midterms. The "Game Over" written on the shirt of this student as he enters the testing center might signify that some fail before they even begin. I apreciated the multilayering of the scene as well. I wish I was able to capture the portrait of Heber J. Grant as well in the back to add more depth to the image. | ![]() Friendly CollaborationAgain this series of images is to go together and show the close collaboration of students in the engineering building. In this instance both students were going between personal life conversation and class topics | ![]() Friendship revivedCaptures the every day moments of seeing old friends on campus over the years. |
![]() ExpectationsJuxtaposes regular life with an icon of theological demands. | ![]() EternityAt BYU, marriage is something that is encouraged, we live in a bit of a faster paced life at BYU, but they are people who have taken the time to slow down. | ![]() BlossomingHow it all starts out! This is an engaged couple living at the pace of BYU. |
![]() Engineers CollaboratingTo show the social aspect of engineers and how collaboration isn't always a structured and tense situation | ![]() Blonde Highlights and an OwalaWhen you look at Utah stereotypes a lot of the time it involves bleached hair and a metal water bottle. I saw this girl and thought that she was similar to someone the guy in the video was talking about, fitting some of those different stereotypes. I took the shot at this angle to also not get a clear view of her face, hiding a clear view of her identity, to once again try to tackle my perspective of that TikTok being a pretty shallow view of BYU students. | ![]() BFFETwo best friends for eternity, it's an older couple who is able still relive memories. Although BYU is a faster paced life, where we are also encouraged to get married quickly, this is the vision they have for us. This is my favorite picture. |
![]() Better than walkingI wanted to show how different students at BYU transport and their preferences to not be late to class. | ![]() Beauty Blur"I saw a TikTok the other day and it was a guy, who I assume is a BYU student, talking about the Utah/BYU beauty standard. He was saying that there is no unrealistic beauty standard, but the problem was actually that we all just dress the same and look the same. I personally thought this approach to the BYU/Utah culture was a bit oversimplified, but I wanted to take on his idea and test it with this contest. For this photo specifically, I wanted to play around with blur to kind of give the idea | ![]() Best Friends or Twins?I wanted to capture a photo that did show similar styles and appearances like the guy said in his reel, so when I saw these two girls walking side by side, I took a quick photo. I think this could possibly defend what the video was talking about with people dressing the same and looking similar, but I also think that it shows just how surface level that idea is because you learn very little about the girls through this photo. |
![]() Family ValuesI wanted to show the values of the school, and its intent to encourage families, the Y is visible in the background and the light glimmers on the backs of the young family |
